Detroit Michigan Model Photographers Mary DuPrie

That is putting it mildly.  Years ago I gave up trying to make prints from my home office, it was certainly the most frustrating, time consuming thing I’ve tried to do.  I have to admit I now print everything at Costco with no regrets.

Tied neck and neck with printing has been Branding, trying to tie my 3 websites together.  To try and put a definitive look to me and my work has been quite daunting.  To say, Yes, this is me and will remain me for years to come is next to impossible for my brain to accept.  I tend to work and think in color families, my Workshop and DVD page is warm, my website is cool and the fonts are all over the place!  The other option would be a non-committal approach and go with black and grey…..but that is just not me.  I want an esthetic to not only look like a photographer but to add my love of design to the mix.  Without design there would be no photography for me, they are forever linked.

Indecision is a killer, the love of everything is a killer, perfection is a killer, lack of view point is a killer……….not knowing how to do all this stuff yourself is a killer, not having the money to pay someone else for this stuff is a killer…..well, you get the point.

What you now have to learn in photography is staggering.  Coming up with a new Logo has been eye opening and frustrating.  I entered Logotournament.com hoping to get all kinds of entries.  When they did come in, I was disappointed, it was like……don’t they know me, can’t they read my mind.  I included a file and brief to try and hone in on what I might be looking for, but to no avail.  In the end I did so much research to try and convey the feeling I was looking for I came up with my own design.  Yes, I still had to pay the $350. to the Logo Contest but it helped me on the path and was worth it.  I stumbled upon www.myfonts.com and www.dafonts.com, their layout and usability are great.

I turned to Scott Kelby’s online training for Computer App training.  I got Illustrator because I was having a hell of a time figuring out how to do it in Photoshop.  Laying back and watching 2 hours of education streaming in shows me how technology has positively effected us in so many ways.  Being in one’s jammies and watching is nice too!  Answering the doorbell in my jammies in the middle of the day can be a bit embarrassing though (i make sure to wear my glasses on top of my head to look professional though).

Who would of thought that education would be so accessible, at the drop of the hat i can google just about anything.  I had to google a few things just to write this….(did you know that affect and effect is the most looked up grammar question there is!)  It’s easy these days to get side tracked while working on projects and feeling chained to ones desk.  For those of us who like the quest as much as the final destination this world of new technology is perfect.  I’ll be exploring the new things I’ll have to learn while dealing with existing trials and tribulations for years to come.

For people who complain that they have lost so much in this new world of photography.  I, on the other hand see how much we’ve gained……just sayin

Mary,

Great blog and excellent points about technology and photography. I am just starting out in photography coming from a very heavy graphic design and advertising background and I find myself on the reverse end of what you are talking about – where I know all of the technological tricks, but I am trying to learn how to capture photography using the natural raw elements. I think that we rely too much on our technology and a lot of people learning photography today do not fully understand the camera and the art of photography. I am practicing as much as I can to learn correct lighting, correct speed and aperature – just trying to get to taking a picture the correct way the first time so that I do not have to rely on my talents with my creative manipulation software. I agree that retouching is needed, but I am trying to limit the amount of time I spend post-production, and trying to keep it RAW! Love your blog, and thank you for sharing your experience with everyone!

I laughed and laughed and laughed over this entry, Mary–I could SO relate to the website and design and logo difficulties!!! I actually spent 4 years trying to come up with a logo I could *live* with…and then it took another year or so to change it completely into something I loved, and actually thought looked professional. I spent literally hundreds of hours doodling variations until one day–magic happened–and there it was! The logo I’d been looking for.

And, of course, along with that, I’ve got years of designing my website on paper–making sure it was the ne plus ultra in ease of use, and logical workflow (having done a fair amount of development in the past, I’m a fiend for the ideal end user experience)–only to realize I haven’t the time or skill to implement the design I want…and can’t afford to pay someone good enough to do it for me…so I’m stuck with violating my principals and modifying someone else’s not-so-user-friendly Flash template.

At least I have a good logo to put on it, though–so that’s one less roadblock on the painful road to “it’s all up to YOU, Baby!” 🙂

Yep. Loved this entry–just loved it. 🙂
