I think this set up has high impact for the money and time. I went to Home Depot and bought a large round cheap light fixture. You take it apart but leave the wires attached and simply plug it in. The bulb doesn’t get that hot and the model can touch it. The power is very low so you either have to up the ISO or simply shoot on a tripod. All the light in this shot is from the bulb.
I’m showing it two different ways but I think it has a few other applications as well. The background is simply crinkled up tin foil on top of a 4×8 ft Styrofoam panel. You could have the entire light in the shot and simply clone out the wires if you wish. It’s simple, cheap and cool. (great for high school seniors)
The shot above is someone who I would see working in the building. I mentioned several times that I would love to shoot him. So one day after work he came in (or I dragged him in) I can’t remember. The first thing I asked him to do was to take off his shirt, I think that caught him by surprise. I don’t think he was very comfortable but when I told him to look mean and pissed off he seemed to relax.
For male models just simply asking them to tip their heads down they look more fierce. I’m looking for their eyes to cut into their eyebrows. I was pleased he had a tattoo and thought it added to the image.
I was inspired by Bruce Talbot of Arizona who does it so beautifully.

I like the look, I have a Profoto ring light that I like the lighting from, this however while creating a similar lighting as a beauty ring etc. the light itself is actually incorporated into the shot. Very nice!
