High Speed Sync

Well I’m still on the subject of HSS.  I got my radio poppers up and running.  They triggered each and every time with no problems.  I was surprised by how fast I was able to shoot with my new quantum turbo 3s.

I was using one 580ex ii, straw gel and a white bounce umbrella with my quantum turbo 3s.  I’ve never used a white umbrella as a bounce, always a shoot through, so that was new.

The radio poppers were a bit frustrating at first, no directions in the box, only online.  I don’t have internet at the studio.  Old videos along with new videos.  Some videos not online yet, I had to playback 20-30 times to see what was going on.  I didn’t know they had a pdf on line, I thought it was all videos and some were missing.  I had to make a few calls to ask various things.  I don’t really understand some of the settings and I was feeling very crabby that day.  Brad at RP was very helpful and mentioned updated videos were coming soon.  He said call anytime, so I did, 3 times!

My one complaint is the sponge foam ring they give you for the transmitter.  It smooshes and doesn’t fit over the hole properly.  Today in the heat the glue melted and it moved over and covered the hole preventing shooting.  I’ll have to find something else to replace it with.

Other than that (which is pretty minor)they work great and yes, I would recommend them.

The model Cori came over in a pinch to help out.  This is right outside my studio.  I have never shot anywhere by the studio or even with greenery before.  I’ve always thought the look was kinda high school senior looking but I’m getting use to it.  With the right outfit I’m sure I could make this work, especially at the 2.8.

Rick Rosen is in town from Orange County CA visiting family so he graciously came over to help. Thanks so much.

We first shot with the sun behind the model and then put her in the shade.  This was shot at 2.8 with my 70-200.  I have another shoot tomorrow with just the model and myself so we’ll see how that goes.  I did use the TV today and I’m glad I did.  Can’t give that up, no way, no how.  Sorry Hoodman.

So all the testing I’ll be offering this summer with be outdoors, hopefully adding some artistic touches to this setup along the way.  I love my studio, it’s waayyy nice, so going outside is not my favorite thing to do, but I’m determined to improve my book in that department.  So tomorrow it begins…

Mary, it was a pleasure working with you. To watch you working with a model is amazing! You REALLY know your stuff! I will recommend you highly to my models in CA. See you next time I am in town.
