You Can’t Have Red

Model Photography Workshops with Mary DuPrie

The image of Andi was taken with window light and one TD5 Westcott Spiderlite.  The guys wanted to practice short lighting during the weekend so we made sure to keep that in mind.  certain hairstyles. vered her face too much, camera left,  the light left a bright stripe down her nose, something to watch out for.  It’s hard to use short lighting with certain hairstyles.

It was nice to have another workshop last weekend, I was really in the mood to get creative.  I have all the tools at my finger tips to make backgrounds  and it goes in spurts.  The background Andi is standing in front is in it’s second phase with just the Venetian Plaster on it.

It’s super hard to get Home DePot to tint VP dark red.  I know they can do it but I have to be extremely persistent about it.  The computer in the machine says it can’t be done, no formula for it.  I know the work around and even then it’s hard.  The trick is to have them ignore that it’s a texture product and tell the computer it’s flat paint and then use Base Three, which takes the most tint.  The clerk is always afraid it will spill over, it does go right to the very top but it’s never overflowed.  They don’t offer red as a standard color, probably because red tints/pigments are very expensive.

Above is the background on the left Andi is standing in front of.  It’s still stapled to the wall and I’ve had to clone in some on the botton of the image.

Mondays post showed Chelsey standing in the red outline it left behind.

The image above is after I’ve put the final touch to it.  I’ve mixed glaze with black tint and rolled it over the backdrop.  I let it set up/tack up and work it into the background to really highlight all the texture.  This particular image really looks like a modern painting.  I like that the image looks like a doorway when lit certain ways.

I want to see an image from a shoot when you use it Dan!

I’ll be shooting a friend utilizing the background pictured above in about a week, Mary. My friend is about to be named the president of an art organization. I showed him the background and he loved the concept. I’ll send you an image when complete.

Thanks so much for everything, Mary. You are one AMAZING lady.
