Mistakes Are In Fashion

Michigan Model Portfolio Photographers Mary DuPrie

With all the shooting at my workshops I forget how much work my lights have to do.  I blew the capacitor on my Elinchrom 1200ws mono light for the second time… boo hoo  I’ve had it repaired in the past and I believe it was around $250.  I blew my Profoto 1200 ws mono head and they wanted $975… ouch!?  So one capacitor and two or three Profoto flash tubes in a weekend.  Profoto flash tubes are 250 buck-a-roonies.

I went to shoot this today and I had to make a change.  Instead of my Elinchrom Octobox as fill I used a bare bulb at the back of the room… opps  I noticed once the shoot was over I had a small dark double shadow.  Humm.

Thinking that double shadows are bad I remembered a couple of weeks ago my Anne Fontaine fall collection catalog came.  The entire catalog is based on huge double shadows.  My double shadow is teeny weeny.

So now I’m just a teeny weeny bit in fashion.

Mary you are too funny, glad you are fashionable 🙂
So sorry about the expense but you know you love the Elinchroms, I sure do love mine, though I will love them a little gentler now that I know the cost.

Oh–and yes, their customer service is GREAT. I’ve used mine for five years and had to return one, after four years of use, when the external case cracked. (Although I’ve never used White Lightnings, from what I read on forums, the big difference between the two brands is sturdiness–Bees aren’t meant to stand up to the same amount of abuse.)

Cost me something ridiculous to get it fixed–like their minimum $35 fee or some such thing. Can’t beat that! 🙂

Hi Aurora, the other difference between the Bees and the WLs is the WLs have thermostatically controlled fans whereas the Bees’ fans are always on.

Ouch! That’s painful!

I’ll just chime in on the tail of Blake’s comment–I use Paul Buff’s Alien Bees, and they’re terrific….and inexpensive. 😉 They might be worth looking into as inexpensive emergency backups. 🙂 http://www.alienbees.com/flash.html

Try White Lightning lights. Amazing value, rugged (mine have flown all over the world with heavy use and no issues). Incredible customer service. I’m not a paid endorser, just very sold on their lighting. Can’t speak to Alien Bees, their less expensive line however. http://paulcbuff.com/
