Just Start Crying

Detroit Michigan Headshot Photography by Mary DuPrie

So as promised I was going to let you know how my new IPhone worked once I got “The Bumper”.

Well it doesn’t work… it sucks

I hate AT&T, what a bunch of bull.  I was told last week I had 90 days to terminate service. They tell me today, it’s 30 and I’ve missed it by 4 days.  My phone drops calls constantly.

Well I missed it waiting for the bumper, you idiots.  Then I waited for their so called tower to get fixed.  Then they sent me to an AT&T store to get a new SEM card.  They tell me today I need a new phone and I would have to pay $330. to do a disconnect. Reasoning with AT&T was futile.

Well, the last two days have been rough.  Without going into detail I had a bit of a health scare a couple of days ago and tried calling the hospital for an emergency appointment.  Dropped call, dropped call.  Every time I called the hospital I had to go through everything again.  Needless to say I started getting rather emotional.  I decided yesterday I had to get rid of the phone.

I was at the Apple store (for something else) when I noticed I had a voice mail from AT&T (it didn’t ring mind you)  I call back from the mall and have to start all over again.  It was like that continuously.  Can I get your info?  Can I get your info?  Can I get your info?

I went back into the apple store and I just lost it.  Starting crying right in the middle of the store!  Yep, I wasn’t teary eyed, it was full blown crying.  I was pissed, angry and upset and I didn’t care.  Needless to say a manager came out, then another manager.  Bingo… crying lady in the middle of the store saying she can’t talk on her new IPhone must of hit a nerve.

They took the phone in the back and said it was fine and they couldn’t do anything.  The managers manager mentioned they could give me a new phone.  Gotta love it.  They mention AT&T is right above the store and they were going to call them personally to see what they could do.  The head manager was apologizing again and I have to say if they thought I cried a lot before I had a major episode.  Full on cry fest, Kleenex needed.  I didn’t even care, it actually felt good.  People who know me wouldn’t exactly call me an emotional wreck, but today tested my patience.

They sent me up stairs (I didn’t bother to freshen up, took my cry face up there) to Anthony and bingo here’s my card, if they charge you a fee bring it in and I’ll credit your account.  So does my new phone work; NO

I had Verizon before this and never had a problem.  I’m taking my phone back tomorrow.  I really hate to take it back, it’s such a beautiful phone.   I truly believe it’s AT&T.

So what I’ve learned from this… Go to the store and start crying.  It freaks people out!

I’m waiting on a Droid that can sync contacts w/ Outlook. Current devices can’t seem to, but I hear rumors that future Droid devices will. My iPhone4 is nice, but not really that much better than the Droid interface that I tried out. The cost of switching prematurely will be well-offset by the function of a working phone….

Hey Everyone
Thanks for the feedback… I now have a new droid. No dropped calls and I can hear better with it. Works perfect. Not as intuitive and easy to use as the Iphone but I’m still glad I switched. Couldn’t figure out how to set up my mail. I’m going to have to take it into the store… bummer
AT&T called last night to ask why I dropped their service… needless to say “THEY HUNG UP ON ME!”

on a side note I paid $199 for the phone and that afternoon I saw it at Costco for $129. PLUS YOU GET $60. worth of accessories with it. The car charger ect. Plus you get 3% back as an executive member. So the same phone is $160 cheaper at Costco. They mail it to you and it takes 2 or 3 days to get. I just couldn’t wait so what’s done is done. An executive membership is $100. so you would still save $60 if you’re not a member.

You’re so darn right about AT&T. AT&T has a real bad customer service and its reception is horrible in most areas. I was with Verizon for over 15 years and never have had to deal with such pains in the ass. The only reason I switched to AT&T was because of Apple came out the first iPhone and I was not able to control my desire to get it 🙁 (my fault). Since then I stopped to upgrade to 3G, 3Gs and even iPhone 4 due to this sucker carrier.

I hope Verizon will release the iPhone as early in 2011 so that I can go back to my favorite carrier. I’m not trying to promote Verizon in any way. I just wanted to share with you
what I’m suffering with AT&T and can’t wait to get out this mess.

I´m really sorry you had such a bad day but don´t you feel relieved that you could let all those emotions go out of your system? there´s definitely a point where you need to get those feelings out of you! I really hope that you are feeling better too!!

Ah, Mary….yet another thing I love about you — your brutal honesty. Sorry you had a miserable day brought on by your cell phone.

Reminds me of my 90-yr-old uncle who says, “My kids think I need to get a cell phone. What they don’t realize is that I don’t want to be reached.”

The dang things are a blessing and a curse, if you ask me. I hope things are looking up for you today, Mary.

LOVE my Droid. Sure, it’s no iPhone, but it IS on Verizon. And it just works. Always.

Ahh thanks everyone. I wasn’t going to post this but was kinda consumed by it. I’m going to Verizon today to look at the new Droids. I don’t know anything about them so we’ll see. I really don’t need much, I’m not enamored by one more piece of technology in my life. I’ll let you know how it goes.

ajajaja, is good advice, but I guess with my 1.97 m, my 220 lbs. entering the store crying in Mexico where all else fails, I do not first reach tears and then call the police to take jajajajajaja, but if I send to my wife, she will look good and solve various problems safe, thanks for the advice Mary

Mary, sorry you are having such a problem. As much as I admire some of the features of the iPhone, I prefer to be able to make and receive calls above all else, so Verizon is it for me. My daughter really wants an iPhone for the cool features but she also wants to keep the Verizon phone for ‘real’ use lol

Sorry to hear about your woes. I hope you get it all resolved tomorrow. I have been with almost all the carriers at one point or another and Verizon is by far the best! After 5 years of great service I don’t think I could ever switch. By the way, Verizon is supposed to get the iPhone possibly by the end of year or early part of next year. However, I think I’ll stick with my Drioid :D!

Oh you poor thing – what a horrible story.

I have an iPhone here in Aus, and while we seem to have better service than you guys, the phone constantly drops out. I will be in the same room I’m always in with full reception one day, and it will just drop to “searching…” and I won’t have any access to 3G or anything.

I think it’s a combination. And this is on an iPhone 3. I’m changing to the new Droid or a HTC phone next… as soon as this contract is up – damn I hate telecommunications companies – they cost so much and lose you business when they don’t work, and you’re always trapped in some dodgy arrangement that has no transparency and is impossible to get out of… what a myth.

Well – I hope thing start turning around for you, because quite frankly, I prefer to read stories about your gorgeous photos… not a breakdown in the Apple store (though it was a bit entertaining :P).

All the best!
