Hey… I’m back from Brazil and lounging around. Lots and lots to talk about but the gist of it is that I’m glad I went. Pictured above is the layout they featured at the event. They had lots of different literature so I kept running into myself unexpectedly.
The only contact the whole time before the show was Skyping with Nildo and it was finally great to meet him and hear his great laugh. A special thanks to Patricia, Nildo’s wife/translator as she made things so much fun.
Our hosts Estudio Brasil put on a first class event.
I have to say I wasn’t educated at all about our hosts city before I left. Sau Paulo is the second largest city in the world… let me repeat myself… the second largest city in the world. Our hotel had a restaurant on the top floor named appropriately, The View, all you could see were high rise buildings 360 degrees.
Stepping right outside the convention center at night. The crescent moon is on the bottom which I learned we never see here. I’m not a big picture taker on vacation but I’m trying. I shot this using my Canon G10, it’s so much easier with a great compact camera.
More musings on Brazil
- Clean streets but an unusually high amount of graffiti. I asked how the graffiti got so high up on the buildings… they are like Spiderman was the response
- Lots of traffic with very polite and civilized drivers
- Lots of dogs but zero poop to be found
- Store owners sweeping the front of their stores
- Their language is truly beautiful and I have no ear or voice for foreign language
- When they say 4pm, they really mean, 4pm-6pm
- Smoking is restricted to the streets, thank goodness
- You had to buy all your water for drinking, no glasses in the hotel room, no free water with your meals
- Wash clothes are an American thing
- No irons or ironing boards in the hotel rooms
- They love their cheesy bread
I was on stage for 1 1/2 hours speaking. I’m not sure of the count of the audience but it was quite large. The audience wore headphones while an interpreter translated. The Portuguese language is about 30% longer than english so I had to speak slower and wait for the response. The audience was dark and I could only see a few people in the front row. A few people were shaking their heads as I was speaking so I choose to focus on them.
It’s extremely difficult to translate the intimacy of my model shoots to a large audience. It’s not a real life situation where the model really doesn’t know how to model. I demonstrated my techniques on how to get a new model up to speed in front of the camera.
An event like this is great resume and link building. It can also be a great boost to your ego, going out of the country and being treated with a reverence not afforded to you here.
Tomorrow… back to reality.

Sounds like you had a great time. I am sure you would draw the same crowds and reverence if did a road show here in the states. Do you ever speak at Imaging USA, Photoshop World, etc?

I was at the audience at Estudio Brasil. I don´t shoot much professional models but a lot of times I shoot people and at that moment they became for me “models with zero experience” ! I enjoyed the way you work. I also share with models what I intend to do, why, the limitations in that shot etc… It was a very different lecture, probably why people were so quiet. Usually we get light, meters, techniques and so on. With you we had delicacy, direction, little tips that makes the difference in expression and body language. Things that are difficult to find in books and make the presentation so special. Thanks, all the best, hope you visit Brazil again.
