I’m not a fan of doing critiques because I don’t like to hear “their” feedback… as in… blah blah blah
I like quiet when I’m doing a critique, as in, just listen. When we bring our books into commercial clients there is no speaking, we just stand there and answers questions.
I received an email from one of my meetup attendees, of Photographing Models with Mary DuPrie Studios, who asked if I wouldn’t mind critiquing some of his images from the meetup. The before and after is a screen capture which is why it’s so fuzzy.
Instead of answering one persons email for a critique I thought it would be more beneficial to do it here. I’ve asked the photographers permission to do so.
The first thing I noticed were Andrea’s lips. When you convert something to B&W the model needs to be wearing much darker lipstick than normal or else they will disappear. The color lipstick blood red works, or even darker, sometimes even black. So if you know you are going to convert a model image to B&W a few things have to be considered up front.
I am a huge fan of dodging and burning using curves layers. I have one layer set to screen mode and one curves layer set to multiply. I burned her face quite a bit and also applied a global curves layer set to soft light blending mode. This is my normal work flow for most of my images. The before image lacks in contrast quite a bit in the face. The background and dress are quite dramatic and I feel the face needs to be also. Quite a fast and easy fix.

It’s nice to see a meetup group like this in other areas as well. I run one here in Syracuse for models & photographers.
The one thing I noticed immediately with this photo is her right cheek. I might have angled her differently for the shot. It’s still a very nice shot.

Yes, Mary’s work makes me envious. I have a mail folder of her blog posts and get worried when days go by without a peep. I’ve learned so much and hope, someday, to take the trip up to Yankee land to attend a workshop!
I know I’ve said this before but I enjoy reading your posts. Your work is really fantastic all the way around & it’s so nice for you to share your experiences….(& humor). Wish I were closer for your meet up groups;)

How was the image converted to B&W? Did you use the Channel Mixer > Monochrome, then use the sliders to push/pull each channel to see what worked best? Different “learning sites” have different methods, so just curious.
ahhh, I didn’t make myself clear. The attendees final image is on the left. I tweaked his and mine is on the right. I just did a screen capture of his to show as an example.
