Detroit business portrait photographers… I just can’t quite figure out how to have a client sit comfortably for an executive image quickly and efficiently.  I just bought a great new photography posing stool recommended to me by Dave Roberts Photography.  I’ve been told by another photographer that the ideal height for the stool is 5″ above the knee… i’ll have to take his word for it.

I use a foot stool for the leading (front) foot… is there a standard height for it, I’m not sure?    I tell clients  to “lean over” your belt buckle.  The sleeve on the jacket does get a bit crumpled but I feel the help it gives the face and neck is worth a bit of wrinkled sleeve.

I made a small posing table today, about 9″x12″, for a new client but I’m not quite sure where and how I should use it?  I thought placing an elbow on it would help but we struggled on exactly where and how to use it.  Is it different for men and women?

I feel there are still some small tweaks I can make to my setup but I’m not sure what.  I’m using five lights for my normal setup.   This image of Bill Proctor, Channel 7 Detroit news investigative reporter was taken with just three lights yesterday.  A medium softbox, small strip light and a gridded background light.  I try to feather the light off the head and just keep the light on the mask of the face when the subject rocks the sexy shaved look.

My main light is to the left to keep the larger right eye in shadow.   Keeping the subjects larger eye in the back and in shadow makes the whites of that eye darker and thus  it appears smaller… imho

I’m loving this new custom painted canvas background I made recently and I think it works with a lot of different set ups.

I come from the model world versus the portrait world and this is definitely more portrait, so I’m wondering if my fabulous photography readers have any tips they would like to share…
