Modeling in Detroit

Metro Detroit Photographers Mary DuPrie

What!?  It’s a New Year… well he seems surprised and confused.  I had a studio New Years Party which was small and low key.  My New Years resolution last year was to be more pro active on socializing at the studio, which I have been.  I had Leroy fill in as a model so he could get a taste of what it was to be in front of the camera.   Modeling is so much harder than it looks and so much of it falls on the photographer.   You can “under” direct and just as important you can “over” direct someone to the point of utter confusion and discomfort.  So I say baby steps.  Tackle the obvious first and then add layers.

Taking bad images is just as important as taking good ones.  The self censoring that goes on when the model sees what they are doing wrong is just as valuable as the usable images.  People don’t just role out of bed knowing how to “model”.

I’ve given lots of workshops over the years and I find the hardest student to teach are photographers that come from the portrait world.  Being formulaic is very hard to break… the lighting… the posing… the rules.  When  I say you have to break all the rules to be a model photographer but then mention how an image doesn’t work they say… but I broke the rules!?  How do you explain you din’t break them in the “right” way.

It’s hard to explain why something looks portraitie versus modelie.  You just know it when you see it.  A model image can look portraitie, but a portrait image seldom looks modelie… hummmm

Looking good Leroy!
Sorry to miss the party, Mary. Photographing snow scenes in UP over the New Year’s weekend. Zero degrees here now. Beautiful snow. Hooray!
