Custom Canvas Photography Backgrounds

Custom Painted Photography Background Workshops Mary DuPrie

Morgan wore this outfit in to the studio yesterday.  She booked a two look shoot and this was her full body shot.  My two look shoot is my most popular… a head shot and a simple body shot to show an agency your figure and how you wear clothes.

I found this background and thought it would work out great.  The background is #12 duck canvas which is pretty thick.  With normal products the backside stays clean but this time I thinned down house paint so much with water that it leached through and gave me this.

I simply poured two or three different flat house paint colors in a paint try and just stirred a bit.  I used an extra long lamb’s wool roller cover, (which sprays all over the place and is especially messy) to simply roll on the paint.  The back side is more of a “stain” now than painted.  I normally would stain the bottom darker as this is how walls would naturally age.  Morgan is standing on the “back” side of a piece of scrap laminate as the floor.

When painting  bed sheets they stain through because they’re so thin, but this was a surprise.  I could use this background  for a year or so then add paint or plaster and use the effect as a first layer to build on.  Knowing how to change and adapt backgrounds over time is a great way to set yourself apart.

The main light is a 5ft. Octo with the baffle and diffusion removed.
