Working At Not Working

Detroit Michigan Modeling Portfolio Photography by Mary DuPrie

I’ve shot Karolina quite a bit over the last couple of years.  She came my way via comp card shoot.  She’s so sweet and so much fun she’s my go to girl when I think of testing.  What’s nice is she never seems bothered when I keep changing my lights, over and over and over again.  She’s chatty and keeps me entertained the whole time.

I posted a short video of this shoot on Sunday, it’s a great reference for new models.

It’s so important to find someone that makes you comfortable to really test set ups.  We test for a couple of hours so it doesn’t feel like work.   When I say two hours I make sure to stick to it.

She’s always happy to get any images I give her and she never asks for anything.  To find a model help you tweak settings without the feeling of needing to step up to the plate is a pleasure. Karolina’s not great at doing her own hair and makeup but I just make sure to test set ups that don’t require it, thus the workout look.

When I haven’t shot for awhile I feel rusty and think “do I remember how to do this”?  So having a “go to” model like Karolina is great.  I’ve used my mom, the kid down the hall, people walking by my doorway and a mannequin head to test when I was desperate.

I wasn’t crazy about this lighting setup for a workout look and won’t be doing it again.  I think I’m going to stick to my beauty dish for the main and my 5 ft octa as the fill.

I send out castings for testing and don’t accept shoots where models ask for specific things, as in, I need a new headshot.  I realize just starting out you might choose to do that, but I’ve just never went that route.  I want my testing to be exactly that, testing what I need to work on.  Word gets around if you start fulfilling orders for testing.
